Lashing rain and howling winds didn't deter intrepid golfer Stuart Chamberlain from raising money for a very worthy cause.
Stuart, who's our Health and Safety Officer, took part in the four-ball Stableford team event at Saddleworth Golf Club in aid of Maggie's Oldham, which raised £13,001, including £220 from Stuart's team.
Maggie's Oldham is one of 23 centres across the UK providing free support for cancer patients and their loved ones. Laura Tomlinson, Centre Fundraising Manager for the Oldham branch, says that it costs £7 for somebody's first chat with one of their dedicated cancer support specialists, so the £13,001 will go some way to help them support so many more people.
Stuart, who is a member at Saddleworth, says: "The day started off in pretty miserable conditions. It was very wet for the first hour, so we got drenched. The rain came in just before tee off and the wind was howling, so it was a very tough day's golf - although I have played in worse being a member up there!"
And to help a well deserving cause, we sponsored the par 5, 476-yard, 14th hole, which added £100 to the total.
Stuart says: "My thanks to HPP for joining the 18 firms sponsoring a hole. The organisers have confirmed the day raised £13,001 so it was certainly worth enduring a bit of wind and rain.
"The winning score was 83 points which tells a story of how hard the conditions were, normally 92-93 is a good score in good conditions. We only managed 71, so we were well off the pace."
A keen golfer for 23 years, Stuart is a regular at Saddleworth and plays off a handicap of 10. He is now looking forward to the Mahdlo charity golf day at Saddleworth on June 30th, for which we'll be entering a team. The very next day - 1st July - we've got a 12-strong HPP team taking part in Mahdlo's Saddleworth 3 Peaks Challenge.
Situated on the northern slopes of Wharmton Hill, the clubhouse is 800 feet above sea level and the highest point is over 1,000 feet, with the surrounding hills ranging from 1,250 to 1,700 feet high - so it's no wonder conditions can be tough in wet and windy weather, and spectacular when it's not!
